January, 2006 - The End of an Era
of an Era" Sale will be held on the property at
Marena horses were originally bred to chase cattle in the rugged bushland and hilly country of the Walkers' property, "Big Yango."
The work was demanding, the horses needed to be handy, clever and calm to stand up to the long hours of work in the mountains (often more than 10 hours a day).
At the end of the week, a wash and a groom and off to the show at the weekend. This regime bred a tough athletic horse, sound of wind with quality bone and a sensible nature.
The Stud moved to it's present location in the Yarramalong Valley at Wyong in 1972. A fire in 1973 razed the Yango residence to the ground and all previous records of our horse's performances were lost, hence the stud's published showing records only date from 1972.
With closer proximity to towns there was a increase in showing and horse breeding and the start of the Marena Riding Academy in 1974.
The following years saw Marena horses winning in pony, galloway and hack classes as well as Breed classes. As well, Lindy swept all before her from Royal Champion Rider at 10 years of age to a total of 32 Royal Show Riding Championships.
Yes, the End of an Era has come for Bruce and I, but a new exciting one is beginning for Lindy Walker Johnson and her children, Luke 21/2 years and Keeley, 8 months.
Lindy will carry on the Marena tradition. We will breed less horses, about 6 per year, and do much less showing until the children are older.
The Marena Riding Academy will run at full operational strength with lessons , both group and private, schools and clinics.
Both Lindy and I will be available to conduct lectures, Clinics and Schools.
Agistment of all categories will still be available.
We will be standing our current Stallions at Stud. Spring 2006 may see the introduction to the public of our Warmblood stallion, Marena Gala Salute.
We are preparing to sell 30 acres of the best land in the Yarramalong Valley as part of our retirement plan. This land, previously used to raise our young horses, is prime agricultural land and situated well above the surrounding land. The property fronts to both the permanent Wyong Creek and Yarramalong Road.

Study the pedigrees, especially for names like Kalimah, Marena Cha Cha, Lowlynn Silver Chief, Alcimaster, Sun Puff (Imp), Weston Sun, Marena Sky Chief, Mr Folly of Kirkwood.
Pedigrees with names of beautiful mares like Marena Caprice, Marena Amber Folly, Marena Stardust, Weston Model, Marena True Love, Marena Accent, Sun Sail, Marena Mayflower, Marena Cadence, Marena Sundance, Marena Fame, Jananzarie Lonicera or any of the “Star” Family should attract your attention.
Regular show goers will recognize that the pedigrees are loaded with Royal Show Champions
Progeny by Marena Sky Chief are unsurpassed as children’s mounts and are great jumpers. See pictures in the Catalogue. He was a good sire of all rounders and Royal Show Champions.
Cedar Lodge Konrad – All his progeny are elegant, classy ponies, true to type and are proving to be excellent children’s ponies.
Marena Legende – The Sire for All Reasons© – Show horses, work horses, adults or children’s horses, he can produce them all.
Shifting – our exciting new sire – His oldest progeny are 3 years and show great athleticism, effortless movement and have good natures.
People who love or are interested in Australian Stock Horses or who have children should look closely at the stallion Marena Legende. He is from our best family with direct lines to Marena Cha Cha (ASH #30), our undisputed most successful broodmare and the mighty Kalimah (ASH #460) who was a legend in his time and the horse history will remember - a winner in all fields he entered – racing, showing, campdrafting, sporting and working classes.
Legende is by the unmatchable Sun Puff (Imp) who has produced so far, the winners of 41 Royal Show Champions. Sun Puff (Imp), an English Riding Pony, was classified as an Australian Stock Horse by three of the Hunter Valley’s most discerning classifiers.
Legende is a full brother to Marena Cadence, a mare sold to Western Australia for a record price and winner of 18 Royal Show Championships, NSW and WA Horse of the Year and the ASH of the Year in WA.
Legende is strong and sound enough to produce work horses, has the correct conformation to breed Stock Horses and Riding Ponies of elegance and type and he has the temperament to breed children’s mounts.
He will be for sale or lease as we have not been able to use him due to his close breeding to our broodmares.
The four Broodmares have been served and may be returned to the same stallion in 2006 season if they do not produce a foal this coming spring.
Most horses are broken in and in show training. Unbroken youngsters are well handled to lead, to pick up legs and are mouthed, ready to ride when the time comes.
All the horses are guaranteed to be drug-free.
