September, 2013

Bruce, Peter & myself have just arrived back from our Safari in East Africa.  What a wonderful trip it was as we saw all the wild animals in their natural habitat - Elephants, Giraffe, Lions, Leopards, Cheaters, Buffalo, Wildebeest, Zebra, Rhino, Hippos, Crocodiles, many species of Antelope from the smallest, the tiny Dik Dik to the biggest, the massive Eland.  We were lucky enough to see most of these shy animals very close to our vehicle.

The highlight was a sunrise Balloon ride over the Masai Mara, viewing the massive herds of the Great Migration of Wildebeest & Zebra as they moved towards the Mara River, the scene of those turbulent river crossings.

We were joined on our trip by the Marfleet family from England - Amanda, Freddie & Kate.  Many Aussies will remember Kate from her riding in shows when she lived in Australia as a little girl.  Kate is now 22 y.o..  She and Amanda have had major success in the English Show ring since returning to that country.  Amanda has branched out into the sport of Trekking.  She and her friend Vicki are in contention for the forthcoming National Championship.

We will post some pictures of our trip later - this is just a quick update as Peter (our Webmaster) has to go back to work at 4:00AM in the morning.

We arrived home to the sad news that our long time friend, Dorothy Paul had passed away.. We arrived in time to attend her funeral the next day.  Dottie was a leading light on the Central Coast, Dr Alister Paul's wife, and an active horsewoman.  Her two children, Wendy & Jeremy, rode at Agricultural & Royal Shows and at Tall Timbers Pony Club.  Wendy won 3 out of 4 Riding classes on her first attempt at Sydney Royal.  It was a pleasure to see this loving family and their grandchildren pay a loving tribute to the Mum.

Other News - in brief

  • There are no foals yet, but some mares are looking quite heavy.

  • Our Warmblood stallion, Marena Salute has been sold  to a lady from the North Coast who will cross him over Thoroughbred mares.  We are very happy with this development as we feel he will have a productive future in a good home.

  • We have moved two very attractive large ponies into stables in preparation for sale.

  • The Talbot family's new pony Glomax Jazzman had his first outing in our stable last week and won Champion Pony Hack - so that was exciting news for the new owners.

  • Sarah Hooke's new ASH Gelding, Lone Pine Jackmen, only 3 years, is shaping up well & Lindy won classes on him at his first showing in Hack classes.

  • The Evans and Hooke families have taken the horses on a Western run of Shows.

  • Lindy had a great time at Brisbane judging at the Ekka and catching up with many old friends.  We competed at Brisbane Royal for 30 plus years consecutively.  We have not been there to compete since Lindy's children were born but as Keeley continues to compete I guess our footsteps will lead that way in the future.

I am pleased to call Australia home,
I hope this finds you all well,

Maureen Walker
