The Canberra TeamCanberra Royal

The Marena Team had a very pleasant time at the 2012 Canberra Royal and in the light of extensive flooding in southern districts of NSW, we were very lucky to have a sunny and mostly dry week.

At left is of the "Team" - L-to-R - Ellie Nicholls, Emma Hollows, Sarah Hooke, Lindy on Marena Outback, Maureen, Keeley on Marena Twilights, Melissa Melton, Will Evans, Gabi Hollows, & Andrea Evans.  Who knows where Luke was hiding?

It was an exciting time for Lindy & Keeley (at left) as they rode in the Parent & Child class for the first time.  In a strong class, they were called in second to Catherine & Lil Mills, who subsequently won the class.  Lindy & Keeley looked great, the horses were in stride but during the workout Keeley’s horse gave her several wrong legs at a critical time which put them out of the ribbons.

Keeley, who won Rider Under 7 to be Led at last Canberra Royal, this year, competed in her Open Rider class on Marena Twilights.  She came third; we were pleased with her first solo performance at a Royal Show.

Lil Mills had another successful show.  She rode Marena Amber Wish for second and third placings in Open classes.

Marena Twilights won her Led class for the second year in a row, led by Sarah Hooke.

At the last minute, we asked Alex Jones, daughter of Wyong Creek Vet, Brett Jones, to ride Wish.  She had never ridden Wish before, and was a finalist in a very big Child’s Pony Hack class.  Alex and her mother, Michelle, also won two blue ribbons at the Show.

Gabi Hollows arrived to see Breezy Street compete in her classes then Gabi had to rush off to see her racehorse What a Shifter (Zing) race in Goulburn that afternoon - he ran third.  Breezy won second in Led ANSA, 3rd in Thoroughbred Mare & 5th in Mare Hack.

Sarah Hooke was very busy with her 3 horses and did many led classes for the Team winning with Marena Twilights and several other placings.  Harriet who was recovering from a major tonsil operation was limited in the riding she could do.  We all hope you are well soon Harriet.

On the Home Front

Our Stallion, Marena Legende, has found a lovely new home with Wendy Miller at Redground Stud near Goulburn.  He had never been off our property before; he walked onto the truck, travelled well, arrived in good order and settled straight into unfamiliar surroundings to the delight of his new owner.  Lindy met a friend of hers at Canberra Royal who said Wendy was really happy with him.

Nell Evans purchased a new horse, DP Jeremiah at the 2011 Melbourne Royal.  Nell is currently on a scholarship to Georgia University (USA) for 6 months and will be home in June.  In the meantime, the bay gelding Gem, is resting at the Evan’s property in Robertson.  He will come to Marena Stud for show preparation prior to the Spring Show season and Nell coming home.

Amy Porter who rode with us for years and works for Channel 9 now has finished her Bachelor of Science Degree.  Well done Amy.

Big Changes

Maureen and Bruce took Luke and Keeley in the Motorhome to Canberra Show.  This may be their last trip as Maureen and Bruce have decided to sell the Motorhome because they are so busy with the Stud that they do not get away in it much anymore.

We have decided to put the Marena Stud property on the market as well.  The property has become too big for us to manage as Maureen and Bruce wish to have more leisure time.

We have decided to down size to a smaller property in the local area.  We will still be offering the same services as we do now on a slightly smaller scale.  We will keep you posted.

As a result of our downsizing over the next few weeks, we will have an on-going Farm Clearance.  All the result of our 50 years of collecting.
Get in early for the best choice.

For sale will be antique furniture, various collectables & garden ornaments, farm machinery, tools & equipment, horse equipment, saddlery, Horse Grooming machine (imported from England), breaking-in gig/sulky, collectable vehicles including 3 x Landrover Series 3, International AL-110 ute, Caterpillar D6 bulldozer with winch, rare Diamond-T Prime-mover, Yard Crane, Wheel Loader/Backhoe, etc., etc., etc.

Regular lessons started on Saturday 4th February and the week-day lessons commenced on Tuesday 7th February.

Our January school was a great success.  Many of our pupils made big improvements with their hard work and dedication.  If they keep it up who knows what they may achieve.

The Marena Allen Wallen Clinic in December was a great success once again.  It was nice to see a few new faces, great to see our usual faces.  We are looking at another Marena Allan Wallen Clinic after Sydney Royal, probably May/June.  I will keep you informed of future dates.  There were lots of photos on uploaded to Facebook.

All the very best to all,

Maureen Walker
